My favorite biased comments from last night’s announcers.
- Shannon Stewart makes a catch, jumping against the wall in left field. Stewart has no arm, currently no feet, and he is completely out of position. Jorge Posada tags from 2nd to 3rd. “Outstanding play by Jorge Posada. Simply amazing.” Note: Why hasn’t Stewart told Gardenhire that he feels the team would be better served with Lew in Left and Stewart DH’ing? Miguel Cairo’s double in the later innings would not have happened with Lew in Left. Good chance Posada doesn’t get to tag with Lew in Left either. This has bothered me for two months now.
- Sheffield cut off a Cuddyer hit to the gap. Nice play to get to the ball. Then he whips around and fires the ball in the general direction of the infield. Buck proclaims, “Great throw by Sheffield!” The ball sailed over the cut off man and was stopped about 20 feet to the first base side of second base.
- A few pitches into an inning after which Mussina gave up hard smash foul/out after hard smash foul/out, the analysis is “Mussina is getting much stronger as the game wears on.” Granted after they said this, Mussina had a great 1-2 inning stretch. But that was after the announcers’ wonderful statements.
- At one point Mussina was said to have “outpitched Johan Santana.” Mussina had given up 4 hits and 1 run, Santana 6 hits and 0 runs. At this point in the game Santana had drew 3 DP’s out of the Yankees (I’m not including the gun-to-home by Hunter). Apparently the pitcher has no part in inducing ground balls in dire situations or starting a strike-’em-out, throw-’em-out DP.
Thankfully, Tim McCarver ceded the victory to the Twins by the end of the game. I was worried I would wake up this morning to find the Twins actually down 0-1.
