The current French riots are definitely related to those previous. The opposite side is trying to protect the labor laws that severely damage France’s future in the open marketplace. These current protests are in response to a potential law that would allow employers to fire young workers within their first three years of employment. Interestingly, the law as it stands results in employers hiring much fewer workers than perhaps they typically would because once the worker is hired the employer is stuck with him/her for a number of years. The law is designed to improve France’s horrendous unemployment number.
This beautiful tidbit should come as a shock to even today’s most jaded and lazy 20-somethings:
[T]he students on the streets today espouse economic views entirely unpolluted by reality. If the [Contrat de Premier Embauche] is enacted, said one young woman, “You’ll get a job knowing that you’ve got to do every single thing they ask you to do because otherwise you may get sacked.” Imagine that.

The golden flock of imbeciles…I love it!
And this is the economic model that is compared favorably to Britain and the United States.
