Austin City Limits

I saw the strangest grouping of artists I’ve seen in a while on Austin City Limits (PBS HD) the other night. Flaming Lips for the first half hour, The Shins for the second half hour. You couldn’t put together two more different acts if you tried.

The Lips were eccentric, strange, and demanding crowd participation … basically what you’d expect. The Shins appear to be the most unassuming group ever devised. They make a Dave Matthews Band concert look like the second coming of White Zombie. The lead singer appeared on the verge of tears the entire show while somehow looking completely emotionless at the same time. It was amazing.

The Shins are a great live act.

The Shins may be great, and I really like their music, but I think I should really see The Flaming Lips live before I die/they break up.

    That’s probably a good goal.
