Sully

I just had to say, Andrew Sullivan has been noticeably quite on the NSA wire-tapping news from yesterday. Unless I’m missing something?

I also heard on the radio this morning that about 2/3 of people questioned don’t find the new NSA revelations to be that big a deal, though who knows about the accuracy of such a poll. Either way, it’s rather sad/scary.

Thanks. Not sure how I missed that - maybe I thought it was a torture post.

I’m thinking of e-mailing my friend who is part of the GW cult-of-personality. Just want to see what he/FOX News thinks.

The conversation at /. includes this in one comment:

The masses almost always value security over freedom until they have so little of either a revolution is born.

    That’s a bit of a spooky quote.

I think I heard it said one time that those who choose security over freedom have neither.

Today Sully quotes Matthew Yglesias on his blog:

“One thing the Bush administration says it can do with this [NSA] meta-data-[gathering] is to start tapping your calls and listening in, without getting a warrant from anyone. Having listened in on your calls, the administration asserts that if it doesn’t like what it hears, it has the authority to detain you indefinitely without trial or charges, torture you until you confess or implicate others, extradite you to a Third World country to be tortured, ship you to a secret prison facility in Eastern Europe, or all of the above. If, having kidnapped and tortured you, the administration determines you were innocent after all, you’ll be dumped without papers somewhere in Albania left to fend for yourself,” - Matt Yglesias, American Prospect. Apart from that, American liberty is alive and well.
