Two Macs? No problem!

I’m a two computer guy. I like to have a slave machine around for offloading non-critical, but important, work tasks like listening to music, web-browsing, chatting, etc. Up until the end of December, my slave machine was a PC with the master being a MacBook. No longer. I felt a Mac was better suited to these tasks, and I grew tired of switching between the Windows XP and OS X UI’s whenever I moused over to my attached PC. Oh, and my PC was so infected with something that half the web sites I hit up wouldn’t even load. A Mac Mini was purchased and happiness is soon to follow.

When I started taking frequent notes on my MacBook, I downloaded and installed Google Desktop. I liked it at first, save for its cmd-cmd shortcut default, which I quickly changed to cmd-shift-g.

Working in the world of the web, I find it a requirement to keep track of programming code snippets, step-by-step processes, or various ideas that pop into my head. I also struggle with detailed household tasks, like setting up financial things and researching the best options for various projects.

Loading up Windows shares upon OS X login

Big problem for me with my Mac conversion has been loading up the Windows shared directories out on my network. Actually, these “Windows” shares reside on a couple Ubuntu servers that serve as network accessible storage devices (I should really write about that at some point). It’s just easier to share the contents of these servers with Samba server (looks like a Windows server on the network), especially while I use an Xbox with XBMC as a media server.

Change default text editor on OS X

I am a Mac OS X rookie, and it shows. I struggled for about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to change my default text editor for TXT files from TextEdit to TextMate. Finally, it is done, and it was mostly easy.
