This old Y2K Bug story really resonated. I started the corporate IT portion of my career in the summer of 2000. I didn’t do the tedious work, but I had tons of coworkers and friends who did. It was amazing how quickly even the narrative within the company that had just spent millions switched to “what did we spend all of that time on?”
To be fair, that wasn’t a widely-held opinion, but some higher-ups who should have known better weren’t shy about discussing the “waste” of the Y2K effort. And I swear eventually some in the IT department even started questioning what it was all for. Maybe this was my first experience of mass gaslighting? Or maybe they were joking?
Why2K? Because it was there!
